The band officially formed when housemates Scott Hanson, Scott Myers, and Nick Lovelace, whom had been casually writing and improvising music together for a number of years, began consistently playing with Alex Lovelace (Nick's brother) on drums in mid 2012. After a few months of writing and rehearsing, Mirror Coat played their first show in August of that year. They performed around Iowa City regularly until the summer of 2013, when they relocated to Chicago.
Each of the band's members contributes to the songwriting process, bringing with them their own distinct list of influences. These vary greatly and include 60s pop acts like The Zombies and The Walker Brothers, electronic music like The Avalanches and Boards of Canada, current popular groups like Deerhunter and Animal Collective, and era defining bands like Sonic Youth, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, and Radiohead.
Mirror Coat's objective is to create what they feel is the best music they can and hopefully to achieve some level of success in the process.
